Keighley’s Jamia Mosque, now one of the biggest in Northern Europe, has been shrouded in scaffold for many months. Image Now a 12 year long campaign to provide local Muslims with a big enough space to worship is drawing to a close. The old mosque could only hold 800 worshipers, so for major festivals people had to pray in tents erected outside the main building.
Woodkirk Stone’s resident masons have produced bespoke ashlar window surrounds, pilasters, special high level cornice and two individually designed ornamental entrances. The many geometric devices featured on the building give a modern interpretation to traditional Muslim architecture.
Sajid Khan, community liaison officer for the Muslim Association said “We feel that it is a very welcoming, peaceful place where people feel at ease. There is a great sense of attachment to the mosque. This is shown by the extent to which people have been willing to put their hands in their pockets and donate towards it.
The Woodkirk Stone provided for phase two blends in extremely well with phase one leading to an imposing façade with delicate shades of solid Yorkshire Stone which will look good for years to come.
